If you don't follow their guidelines when you design your website and during submissions of your site to their index you will not rank well. In fact you may not even be included in their database at all if you don't follow their guidelines.

And if you didn't already know about Google's Sitemap system you should get to know what one is, how it is generated and how to submit it to Google. First you have to generate a proper sitemap, a 'Google friendly' page that Google can subsequently use to efficiently crawl your site. Google has a system in place that will help you generate sitemaps, but it is very technical and requires that you run specialized applications on your web host's server.
Sounds difficult and time consuming? Well it is. The good news is that there are some places popping up online where you can use your web browser to generate a sitemap for you, though you will likely not have as much flexibility as you would if you used Google's methods.
