Subject: Hormel's "beef" with CyberPromotions (On spam)
Dear Gary, and fellow readers/writers of EMD,
About six weeks ago, when the fur was flying pretty good on the spam
issue, I posted my thought along with the rest. Part of my post was
actually "tongue in cheek". However, it appears that I was cutting
"closer to the bone" than I knew. Here's that section of my original
post from EMD #15A.
> Another issue I’ve never seen addressed is Hormel Meat’s right not to
> have the registered, copyrighted name of one of its best selling
> products attached to a totally non-related object, and used only to
> constantly disparage. (You never hear spammers calling their mail spam,
> do you?) I think, if they wanted to, Hormel could file suit in federal
> court for libel, and get a cease and desist order against any and all
> who refer to UCM as spam. After all, you don’t see Ayds weight control
> candy on the market any more do you? No, because of the name!
> Psychologically, if you hate spam (the mail), and say so long enough and
> loud enough, people will begin to hate Spam, the meat (even more) and
> sales will (perhaps already have) suffer. Have I got a point?
Now today, I received my webnews@newslinx.com, and here's the first
article.
> Hormel Foods: Stop using the word "spam"
>
> PHILADELPHIA - Spam is not necessarily canned meat, insists the nation's largest bulk e-mail company.
>
> But Lawyers for Hormel Foods Corp., distributors of the famous canned meat product, have asked Philadelphia-based Cyber Promotions Inc. to stop using the name Spam. They have not filed a lawsuit.
>
> Spam is slang for the practice of sending commercial e-mail in bulk. Cyber Promotions founder Sanford Wallace, sometimes known as "Spamford," said the company will continue using the word on its Internet site.
>
> "The term 'spam' is part of the vocabulary of 25 million Internet users," said Wallace, who doubts it would be confused with the food. "We didn't believe it's trademark infringement to use a slang word."
>
> Last year, a federal court in New York rejected Hormel's trademark infringement case against Jim Henson Productions for calling a pig-like muppet "Spa'am" in a recent movie.
>
> Wallace believes Spam became slang with a skit from the British comedy group, Monty Python's Flying Circus. In that skit, the word is repeated until one of the actors is driven crazy, he said.
>
> Although Hormel officials want Cyber Promotions to stop using the word Spam, they have not asked the company to stop using the term "spamming," a slang word that denotes mass junk e-mailing.
>
> "We want them to recognize that Spam has been a widely known Hormel Foods trademark for 60 years and they are not authorized to use that trademark for their commercial use," Hormel spokesman V. Allan Krjeci said in a statement Thursday.
>
> Hormel, based in Austin, Minn., has also asked Cyber Promotions to stop displaying cans of Spam when promoting the bulk e-mail business.
>
> By The Associated Press
Now we're getting down to the "meat" of the issue, aren't we?

*** NEW POST - Eudora Pro Question ***
From: info@hardwaypro.com
Subject: Eudora & Mail software
Dear Gary,
I have Eudora 3.0 and am planning on using it for a bulk mailing to
subscribers for an email newsletter soon. The only problem I'm finding
is that I don't want the recipients of the email to be able to "Reply to
all" and send an email to everyone else on the mailing list. Do you how
you can avoid this and/or is there someway to set up my list
differently?
Basically, I'd just like it to be simple: MAIL TO: Newsletter@abc.com
(and it goes to all on the hidden list) and if they respond to the
newsletter by "reply" or "reply to all", the message only comes back to
me.
Any help will be appreciated.
P.S. I really enjoy getting the E-Marketing Digest.
Thanks!
Sincerely,
Christopher A. Brya

Chris, all you have to do is choose the BCC button instead of the
TO button when using your address book. BCC means 'blind carbon
copy'. Address the post to yourself and put your recipients in
BCC and no one will see your list, nor be able to 'reply to all'
to reach them.

I am using Eudora Pro 3.0 (32) (which, of course, is a paid
program) and did just as explained above and it works. In fact
if it did not work with this post you would see it off the page.
I went into the Eudora.ini file, and added those two statements
and it now prints 66 characters per line. In fact, I forgot to
change it on my laptop, and had problems this week.

George, I'm trying to figure out why you would need 50 different
address books. I have one book with multiple entries. Many of the
entries have a number of addresses assigned to them. In this way I
only need one book.
